Mary Heilmann’s 21st Century Fox sold for $1,280 at Freeman’s Women’s Work auction on March 25, 2026, in Philadelphia. The counterculture of the 1960s, as well as Heilmann’s native California, has been a huge inspiration behind many of the works she’s produced over the years. Heilmann has been hailed as one of the most influential abstract painters of her time, but her rise to prominence wasn’t without a few setbacks along the way.
After studying ceramics and sculpture during her college years, Heilmann moved to New York City looking to further her artistic career. However, after various galleries and exhibitions rejected her works, she decided to pivot to painting. This is where Heilmann shined. Her abstract geometric shapes take on bold colors, with subtle nods to the Pacific Coast, where she grew up. Her decision not to conform to the prevailing style made her work even more distinct.
Perhaps what really makes Heilmann’s creations stand out is the deceptive ease with which they’re done. The signature effortless feel is just an illusion—every stroke and drip is applied with expert precision.
